Child Care 2010 Budget Review
The University Child Care Committee met on Tuesday, January 18th to review their budget from 2010. The major programs and centers operated by UW-Madison are Eagle’s Wing, Preschool Lab, Waisman Center, Bernie’s Place, University Housing, and Little Chicks. Overall, these facilities operated on losses, with the total loss coming to around $400,000. Measures are being taken to bring down losses, which include fee rate increases, return of pay increases, furloughs, and a 1% across the board cut. We also discussed the incoming funding from 4K, which is a program for 4-year-old Kindergartners. There is also a push to secure funding from UW Hospitals due to the fact that at some centers, their employees account for 25% of slots used. In conclusion, UW-Madison continues to provide high-quality child care to faculty, students, and the community. In order to ensure this continues steady, sufficient funding must be established.
