LGBT Issues Committee meets to set annual objectives and agenda
The LGBT Issues Committee met Monday, September 20 to discuss leading issues and opportunities for the 2010-2011 academic year. Dr. Michael Ramsey-Musolf, professor of physics, takes over this year as chairman.
Key items for the committee this year include:
- Admissions: How is the admission staff addressing issues, questions and needs specific to LGBT high school students as well as potential LGBT graduate students. This includes tailored materials, ability to answer questions and provide a welcoming response to LGBT-related inquiries. The committee will also work to encourage admissions staff to attend LGBT college admissions fairs at least within the Midwest.
- LGBT Certificate Program: Explore different ideas for strengthening the program with the ultimate goal of developing a Queer Studies major anchored in one or more appropriate departments.
- Annual Diversity Forum: The LGBT community has only minimal representation in the annual Diversity Forum scheduled for next month. The committee will address potential avenues for more visibility and inclusion in next year’s event.
The committee will meet next week with Vice Provost for Diversity Damon Williams to receive an update on various initiatives his office will be exploring and implementing.
